Scoliosis Awareness Month 2021 – Share Your Story: Olivia

Olivia Scoliosis Xray

hey!

My name is Olivia!

I’m a scoliosis warrior and spinal fusion survivor!

I was given a suspected scoliosis diagnosis in May 2019 after my doctor did the Adam’s forward bend test and it looked like I had a curve. I was referred to x-rays that I got in the beginning of June 2019 that confirmed my diagnosis.

Later that month, I went to see an orthopedic surgeon/orthopedist and I was given the option to brace or wait until surgery.

My curves at the time were 37° and 31°. I decided to braced and was fitted for my brace.

After some mix ups, I finally received my proper brace. I braced for 10 months until I had my brace checkup (postponed due to covid).

Unfortunately, my x-rays revealed my curves has become 33°, 48°, and 31° meaning I needed spinal fusion surgery before things got worse.

On June 29th, 2020, I had my spinal fusion surgery. I had 4 severe curves before surgery and my rib cage was starting to collapse. Recovery was one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through along with scoliosis.

However, my scoliosis has empowered me to raise awareness for invisible illnesses!

Happy scoliosis awareness month!
